Canada's Action for Climate Change

The Government of Canada

The Government of Canada created the 'One-Tonne Challenge' as a guide to action on climate change. The guide, which was widely distributed in Canada, provided helpful ideas on how each citizen could reduce personal greenhouse gas emissions, in order to help meet our Kyoto reduction targets.

The New Government of Canada cancelled the programme and ordered all remaining copies of the action guide to be destroyed. We still have some at SPEC.

If you want to know more about the New Government of Canada's position on climate change, check out this website.

If you want to know about the proposed "Clean Air Act", you can see the government's colour brochure but it doesn't tell you that you should expect no change whatsoever in federal action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for at least the next four years.

British Columbia

BC's Climate Change Exchange facilitates interaction between various government, civil society and private sector organizations in BC engaged in public education and outreach on climate change, impacts and solutions.

British Columbia has a plan — Weather, Climate and the Future: B.C.'s Plan — that will guide the province's approach as it works with the federal government, industry, local government and individuals to address climate change.

City of Vancouver

In 1998, Vancouver joined the Partners for Climate Protection(PCP); an initiative for Canadian municipalities to reduce their GHG emissions. In December, 2003, the City approved a Corporate Climate Change Action Plan for its own civic facilites, buildings, fleets and activities. It will reduce emissions from its own operations to 20 per cent below 1990 levels-a reduction that far exceeds the Kyoto target and demonstrates the City's commitment to leadership on climate change.

The Cool Vancouver Task Force have drafted a Community Climate Change Action Plan to reflect the needs and concerns of its consitiutents. SPEC is a member of the City of Vancouer's Cool Vancouver's Task Force.
