SPEC works on transportation issues because they vitally affect the quality of our lives and of the air we breathe. Increasingly, transportation is also an economic issue: our transportation decisions need to be informed by the reality that fossil fuels will not be here forever.

Our focus is to help citizens reduce their own ecological footprints by examining their transportation choices. We work with governments and agencies like Translink to ensure that there are real, effective public transit options in place.

Good urban planning reduces our need for the car, by letting us live, work and play in compact, complete communities.

Simple Things you can do:

• Walk, bike, or take public transportation.
• If you have a car, combine trips to reduce total mileage, and keep it well maintained to reduce oil leaks and runoff.
• Consider joining a car-sharing group, especially if you don't use your car frequently.
• If your are planning on buying a car, ask your dealer about the most fuel efficient models available. Consider buying a hybrid vehicle, if you have the option.
• For one month, eliminate as many short car trips as you can. Keep a rough tally on the kilometres you don't drive. Calculate the emissions you saved!
