Call2Recycle -approved as the first government-mandated consumer battery collector and recycler in North America

April 15, 2010
Call2Recycle has been approved as the first government-mandated consumer battery collection and recycling program in North America, selected for implementation throughout the province by the British Columbia Ministry of the Environment. Call2Recycle was chosen based on its rechargeable battery collection program that has collected more than 100,000 kilograms of rechargeable batteries in British Columbia since the program's inception in 1997. Starting July 1, Call2Recycle's existing infrastructure of 1,200 retailers, municipalities, businesses and public agencies will start accepting all household batteries free of charge.

Call2Recycle is operated by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling
Corporation (RBRC) a non-profit organization. Learn more at call2recycle.ca or 877.2.RECYCLE

You can currently drop off your old non-rechargeable batteries at:
Best Buy and Future Shop for free collection by Green Tec.
IKEA and Mountain Equipment Co-op collect batteries as long as they were originally purchased at their store.
Students and staff at UBC can drop off all kinds of batteries at the Special Items Recycling Station in the basement of the SUB building (electronic waste and many other items can also be dropped here for recycling or reuse).
There are other battery collection spots around town where non-rechargeable batteries are accepted, but be aware that not all of them are responsible recyclers!
