Located on the rooftop of the SPEC Sustainability Demonstration Centre at 2150 Maple St., the Rooftop Garden stands as an example of an urban agriculture solution.
At its inception, we set out to develop production methods that could be used by people living in apartments and with limited backyard space. We grow a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers in containers with the help of our dedicated volunteers who assisted with the potting, care and maintenance of the garden.
We continue to test out the best methods for container gardening. In 2008, we tested the relative benefits of three organic fertilizers: alfalfa meal, flax meal and compost. We also tried out a wide variety of pots to see which performed best. In 2009, we conducted a scientific study to establish the impacts of three different types of soil amendments on rooftop container radishes, lettuce, peas and carrots. We are currently compiling and analyzing the data will have it available to the public soon.
We invite the public to visit the garden with us to learn more about gardening solutions for small urban spaces.
The garden has been submitted as part of the City of Vancouver's 2010 Community Shared Garden Plots by 2010 challenge.
