    For five years, Kits House and SPEC have collaborated to organize the West Side Community Food Market. The market connects people with their food and community and supports the local economy, generating over $22,000 in revenues for vendors (2015).

    Take part in a guided tour of SPEC’s solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on top of Mountain Equipment Co-op’s store on West Broadway in Vancouver. 

                                     Public Tour Dates:                               

    Mon, July 25, 6 pm - 7:30 pm
    Sat, August 610:30 am - noon
    Wed, September 7, 5:30 pm -7:00 pm

    Meet: At the roof top parking lot of Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC at 130 W Broadway, Vancouver). Right by the store entrance, there is a staircase and elevator to get to the rooftop.

    Important: The solar panels are not wheelchair accessible. To reach them, you have to climb a 2 meter ladder.

    RSVP: Registration is limited to 80 people

    You can learn about: 

    • solar energy systems 
    • cost savings and how to integrate solar into your home and buildings
    • the newest storage options. including the Tesla Powerwall
    • new community solar initiatives in BC
    • BC's energy supply
    Great for kids and adults.

    Water Wise Gardening

     Grow lots of food with little water

    Learn when and how much to irrigate, irrigation for gardens and small-scale systems, water-wise practices, drought tolerant crops, and choosing the best irrigation system (drip, micro-sprinkler, etc) for your garden.

    Get hands-on experience with:

    • How to measure soil water content by hand
    • Assembling irrigation hardware
    You could also win in a draw two raised-bed drip irrigation systems! (estimated value $50).

             About the Instructor: Dr. Jose Celedon 

    Jose grew up spending his summer holidays and weekends helping at his uncle’s Farm where he learned his first lessons about growing vegetables and fruits. Since then, he has been always involved with different farming activities, from driving tractors to fixing irrigation pipes. Jose worked in irrigation research for the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture and developed teaching material in water management and irrigation for the University of Chile. He obtained a PhD in Horticultural Sciences at the University of Florida, USA. Currently, Jose is doing Postdoctoral studies in tree defenses against insects at the University of British Columbia in addition to collaborating with SPEC to promote water wise gardening practices.

    Integrated Pest Management Workshop

    Got bugs on your balcony? Wilted plants in your yard? Join us as we explore pests in the garden with practical tips for creating pest-free places.

    Learn about: 

    • Common pests in the garden
    • Organic pest control options
    • Importance of plant diversity for healthy gardens

    Get hands-on experience with: 

    • Assessing plant health
    • Identifying garden insects
    • Using organic pest control                                   


             About the Instructor: Kiara Jack               

    Kiara has a Diploma in Environmental Studies from Langara College and a B.Sc in Global Resource Systems from UBC. She is a Professional Agrologist with the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists.  Kiara specializes in integrated pest management (IPM) for conventional and organic potatoes and vegetables, as well as, seed potatoes.  She has also monitored blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries. Her research has focused on tuber damage reduction at harvest, two spotted spider mite and thrips control in potatoes, and pest, disease and soil management options for organic production.  She has experience collaborating with members of the government and industry and farm worker experience in conventional, organic and permaculture farming systems.

    Composting Workshop

    Come learn how you can compost at home, whether you have a backyard, or a balcony. Learn how to set up, take care of, and harvest both backyard and a worm composting bin systems.

    Bronwyn has been working at City Farmer since 2008, when she connected with the organization during her undergraduate degree studying Food and the Environment at UBC. She works both in the City Farmer Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden, and teaches worm bin and backyard composting to ages 3 to adult.

    About City Farmer:

    For 38 years, City Farmer has been teaching people how to grow food in the city, compost their waste and take care of their home landscape in an environmentally responsible way. People can visit the City Farmer Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden, 2150 Maple Street, and see how we take care of our urban landscape, including a climate adaptation garden, green roof, cob shed, organic food garden, permeable lane, natural lawn, waterwise garden, worm and backyard composters and more.
